What is intersegmental traction?

Intersegmental traction is a gentle therapy done on a special table with rolling pads. The rollers move under your spine in a slow, repeated way to stretch small sections (segments) of the spine one at a time. It is not a forceful adjustment — the motion is steady and relaxing, aimed at easing tightness between vertebrae.

How it may help you

Many people feel less stiffness and more ease of movement after a few sessions. The rolling motion can help relax tight spinal muscles, improve joint mobility, and encourage small increases in circulation and fluid movement around the discs. People often describe the treatment as calming and mildly relieving for low back or neck tension.

What to expect and safety notes

A session usually lasts 10–30 minutes and is done lying on the traction table fully clothed. You may feel warm, relaxed, or slightly sore afterward — this is normal for some patients. Intersegmental traction is safe for many people, but it is not appropriate for everyone (for example, certain fractures, infection, advanced osteoporosis, or recent spinal surgery). Always tell your chiropractor about your full health history so they can decide if it’s right for you and adjust the treatment accordingly.
